Soup, Sandwich and Scripture

(St. John’s – March 27, 2009) The Catholic Church since June 29, 2009 has been celebrating a special jubilee year dedicated to St. Paul to mark the approximately 2,000th anniversary of the saint’s birth.

The pope officially opened the Pauline year with a prayer service June 28 in the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls in Rome, where the saint's tomb is located.

Over the next number of months the Archdiocese of St. John’s will be acknowledging the anniversary by hosting a series called “Soup, Sandwitch and Scripture.” The series of lunch time conversations will be held in the historic Basilica Museum Episcopal Library. The series will present a number of invited guests who be asked to talk about the life, times and theology of St. Paul.

The first in the series of speakers is Archbishop Martin W. Currie of St. John’s who has chosen the topic “Different Worlds? Paul’s World and Ours”. Archbishop Currie will explore what “a man of the first century has to say to our own.” The presentation will be given on Monday, March 30 from noon – 1:00 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring their own sandwich, organizers will provide, soup, tea and coffee.

Anne Walsh, the Director of Adult Faith Formation for the Archdiocese of St. John’s said that the series of presentations is an opportunity to discuss the place of St. Paul, his teachings and his impact on the church and society generally.

Three more presentations are tentatively planned with the series concluding on June 29 with a Mass for the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul. The lunchtime conversation on June 29, the final in the series, will also be lead by Archbishop Currie.

Seating is limited for all sessions – the sessions are by reservation only. To reserve a seat call 709-726-3660.
