St. Patrick's Day to be observed on March 15

(St. John’s) This year St. Patrick's Day falls on the Monday of Holy Week and as a result the feast day will be commemorated “liturgically" in the Archdiocese of St. John’s on Saturday, March 15.

St. Patrick, Stained Glass at the Basilica The Benevolent Irish Society’s traditional march to the Basilica Cathedral followed by a reception in the Episcopal Library hosted by Archbishop Martin Currie of St. John’s will take place on the Saturday rather than on March 17.

In the Archdiocese of St. John’s where St. Patrick is a secondary patron a petition recalling the patron will be added to the Prayer of the Faithfull at Mass and at morning and evening prayer on March 17.

St. Patrick is given a special place in the hearts of many in the Archdiocese of St. John’s. Two parishes take his name St. Patrick’s Parish, St. John’s and St. Patrick’s Parish, Burin.

The Vatican's Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments suggested moving the solemnity of St. Patrick, Ireland's patron saint, to the nearest Saturday, March 15, the day before Palm Sunday.

The question of how to celebrate the Irish saint is not usually such a dilemma, the last time his feast day fell during Holy Week was in 1940.
