Sr. Elizabeth Davis, rsm Named Memorial University 2008 Alumna of the Year

The Lifetime Achievement award at Memorial University of Newfoundland recognizes an individual’s contribution to and distinction in their chosen professional fields. It honours individuals who inspire others by displaying exceptional human values.

Those who know Sister Elizabeth Davis, know that her energy and enthusiasm are truly remarkable. The list of her awards and honours alone is longer than most people’s resumes. She is a Member of the Order of Canada, recipient of the Award of Excellence in Healthcare Administration from Canadian Healthcare Association, recipient of the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the Canadian Red Cross Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter, recipient of the Donald J. Fraser Memorial Medal, and Woman of Distinction Award from YW/YMCA of St. John’s as well as the Leadership Achievement Award from the University of Toronto’s Society of Graduates in Health Policy, Management & Evaluation and the Canadian Federation of Nurses’ Unions Bread and Roses Award, to name only a few of her awards.

Sister Elizabeth has made a giant contribution to the health care education and services in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. In the 1990s, she oversaw the consolidation of seven independent organizations into Healthcare Corporation of St. John’s. Eventually she served as the president and chief executive officer of the new corporation between 1994 and 2000. She was also instrumental in the creation of the Centre for Nursing Studies.

Not quite done with her work, Sister Elizabeth became a driving force behind the creation of Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Health Information. The centre is today the most complete and comprehensive depository of health information in the province and a model for other jurisdictions across Canada and internationally.

However, most Newfoundlanders and Labradorians will remember Sister Elizabeth as a passionate high school teacher and lecturer on health care, ethics and education. They will also remember her as one of the patient listeners on the Newfoundland and Labrador Royal Commission on Our Place in Canada as they recounted what it means to be a Newfoundlander and Labradorian.

Sister Elizabeth also served as the adjunct professor at Memorial University, as a seasonal instructor at the School of Theology, University of Toronto and has taught at Dalhousie University, Royal Roads University and Queen’s University.

In 2007, Sister Elizabeth accepted another challenge as she became a Mentor at the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation interacting with a new generation of Canada's scholars and leaders.

For her remarkable energy, her insight, enthusiasm and compassion, Sister Elizabeth Davis has been chosen as the 2008 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award.
