NEWFOUNDLAND CHOIR WINS INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE BASILICA CATHEDRAL CHOIR DIRECTOR

(St. John’s) Lady Cove Women’s Choir of St. John’s , directed by Kellie Walsh has established itself as one of the premier choirs in the world by being awarded First Place in the prestigious Béla Bartók 23rd International Choir Competition held in Debrecen, Hungary.



As a member of the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing Association Béla Bartók International Choir Competition is among the most prestigious contests of Europe.

Lady Cove Women's Choir is named after the community of Lady Cove in Trinity Bay. Based in St. John's, the Choir was established by Kellie Walsh in September of 2003. Kellie is conductor of the choir at the Basilica -Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.

In addition to being the conductor of the Basilica Cathedral Choir she is associate conductor of the youth choir, Shallaway and also conducts the senior choir at St. Bonaventure's College, and the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Suzuki String Orchestra.

She also enjoys a busy schedule as a workshop clinician and adjudicator for music festivals and music camps all across Canada. Kellie also works on a regular basis with internationally acclaimed conductors.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Choir won the international competition in Hungary in the female choir's category. They were the only Canadian choir to be invited and were up against some extraordinary global competition. Other choirs in the section included two choirs from Hungary and one from Greece.

Lady Cove actually tied for first place with the Béla Bartók Female Choir from HUNGARY.

The choir participated in the international competition from July 28 – August 4 in the historic Hungarian city. Other cities on the Lady Cove itinerary included Budapest -- Aug. 4 - 6 , Vienna, Austria Aug. 6 - 9 and Salzburg, Germany, Aug. 9 - 12.

The Choir released its debut CD, Lady Cove in fall 2006. The CD is available in most record shops and in the Basilica Museum and Basilica Cathedral Gift Shop.
