June 21, 1863
KILBRIDE CHURCH FORMALLY DEDICATED

On this date June 21, 1863 Kilbride Church was formally dedicated by Bishop John Thomas Mullock, Bishop of St. John’s. It was one of the five stone churches commissioned by Bishop Mullock. The only one of the five still standing is in Ferryland.

Kilbride Church
The original St. Brigids , was located in what is now the Kilbride Cemetery, Bay Bulls Road. Mass and other services were provided by priests from other parishes in the city, at first from the Cathedral (now Basilica) Parish (1863-1872) and later St. Patrick’s Parish (1872-1917).

The original church burned down in 1892, however, mass continued to be celebrated in a school building located near the Kilbride Cemetery. In 1917, Archbishop Roche elevated Corpus Christi to the status of an independent parish.

Corpus Christi initially was without a church of its own. The Parish made a financial contribution towards the expenses of the Chapel at Littledale, part of the Sisters of Mercy St. Bride’s Convent complex, and used the facility as a parish church until the construction of the present-day structure located at 260 Waterford Bridge Road, St. John’s (dedicated on August 19, 1923 to Corpus Christi).

For more information and or for a photograph of the original church contact the Archives of the R.C. Archdiocese.
